Family story 1976-1982

Jerusalem; Gilo. Bezalel.

Fanny and I got married in July, 1976 in Jerusalem. After travelling to South America and South Africa, we lived in a block of apartments for married students of the Technion and Haifa University. Alon visited Israel for 3 months and so we got to entertain him and do a bit of travelling, mainly in Jerusalem, where Fanny’s family lived in the suburb of Gilo. Fanny’s aunt and uncle (Sara and Moishe) and also her grandparents had left Uruguay and also lived in Gilo. When Fanny finished her studies at the Technion in 1979,we also moved to an apartment in Gilo. Fanny began working as an architect while I finished my studies in photography at the Hadassah College. Yaniv was born in this period at the old Shaarei Tzedek hospital.

After spending 3 months in the IDF engineering corps I began working at the Bezalel Academy of Arts as house photographer.

Alon began studying at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, so we saw him often and Chaim and Lily used to come visit at least once a year, staying at Golden Beach where Chick and Yehudit had moved to in 1980.

Shlomo and Miriam opened a shop for bags and suitcases in Agrippas Street in Jerusalem town center. At the back of the shop was a large workbench where Shlomo fixed damaged bags and suitcases for the public and also for the airline companies. He was always good with his hands and had a very unique way of solving the problems presented to him, both in his work and at home. Miriam managed orders and sales. Their work together served as an example to everyone and they were well known to the Jerusalem public in the days before the malls damaged the fabric of the town center.

Liad, too was born at the old Shaarei Tzedek hospital, 15 minutes after arrival. I missed the birth, while registering Fanny’s admittance.
