Most people take a camera with them when visiting places. I was no different. Some of my first photos were taken when I was 10 years old. I travelled to a summer camp at Onrus, 850 miles and a 2-day train journey from home. Sadly I have none of these photos, having left the camera in the train on the way back home.
I left our home in Linksfield at the age of 18 when I was enlisted in the army. When I left South Africa a year later and went out into the world, photographing places gave me a sense of belonging to it. My camera, a Leicaflex SL2, went with me wherever I went.
